chapter 18

Angel

Plopping my unbalanced and inebriated ass down on the sand, I turn the vodka bottle up smirking at the prospect of finding Isiah’s villa once I’m done with this legal liquid form of an emotional equalizer. That shit is laughable and also not happening. The best I can hope for is the ability to crawl back out of the way of the waves that are washing over my feet. At this point, I don’t remember the address anyway and don’t want to. That’s the whole purpose for the bottle that I have a grueling grip on.

Forget…

Numb…

Nothingness…

My three current beachside best friends.

I used to wonder why I couldn’t have one of those dads that protected and cared for their daughter. The strong sturdy kind that lives for the day that they walk me down the aisle, handing me off to my beautiful future. I realized real quick that shit was never going to happen. On top of that, the best person I’ve ever known, my sweet southern Brea-bee, lost both of her parents in a car accident. And if anyone ever deserved that father fairytale bullshit, it’s her. Shit happens.

I wasn’t bothered when my dad conveniently evaporated like an evil poltergeist banished from the life of me. In fact, it was a blessing. After that night Isaiah showed up things changed for the better or so I thought. I never asked about what happened in that ally and Isaiah never mentioned it. My thoughts drawled out their own conclusions. In my eyes, Isaiah was my unspoken curbside answered prayer. He saved me and that much I know to be facts.

He was a fit boy back then. Larger than most grown adult men but lean. And you knew by looking at him that he could handle himself. Of course, it’s nothing compared to the man he has become today, no-no. It all makes sense though. He has super genetics. I giggle to myself and tip the bottle back for another go. What are the freaking odds? Isaiah and Channing are brothers, great.

It was those darkened holes that told a sinister tale all on their own. Making you believe that he was tiptoeing the edge of crazed, barely balanced. Exactly where Isaiah preferred to be, evenhanded on a fine line. And depending on your actions would be the crucial factor on which side you’d become acquainted with. Dr. Jackal or Mr. Hyde-you got to decide.

The rent was paid every month along with the utilities, and food magically appeared in my cabinets as well as the frig. I knew it was Isaiah. Who else would it have been? No one else gave shit. He took care of me and even continued to do so long after he was gone. Why? I’m not even sure but he did.

He catered to me by playing board games that I could tell he didn’t give a shit about. He only did so to appease me. It made me smile and most of the time he’d let me win.
